The Federal Government has introduced a new skills training programme in Katsina State under the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) , Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative.

The programme will provide ₦300,000 worth of free training to 200 selected youths in computer hardware maintenance and GSM repair.

The focus is on equipping young people with hands-on skills that can lead to employment or self-reliance.

What the IDEAS–TVET Programme Covers

The training is being carried out through the Federal Ministry of Education’s TVET Initiative Programme.

Each participant will receive:

  • Free training valued at ₦300,000

  • Step-by-step instruction from beginner level

  • Preparation for National Skills Qualification (NSQ) certification

  • Support toward job placement after completion

Computer hardware and GSM repair services are widely needed across Nigeria. From phone faults to laptop maintenance, trained technicians are in demand in both cities and rural communities.

Major Investment in Katsina Youth Craft Village (KYCV)

The programme was launched at the Katsina Youth Craft Village (KYCV).

According to the Coordinator, Engr. Kabir Abdullahi Kofar Soro, the Katsina State Government has committed large funds to upgrade the centre.

He stated that:

  • Over ₦700 million was approved for renovation.

  • More than ₦4 billion was spent on tools, equipment, and industrial machines.

The upgrades are aimed at improving training standards and creating a well-equipped learning environment for students.

₦60 Million Federal Training Award

KYCV recently secured a ₦60 million award from the Federal Ministry of Education under the IDEAS Project.

The centre qualified after scoring 86.25 percent in a technical assessment conducted under the World Bank-supported IDEAS Project.

The evaluation examined the centre’s facilities, training capacity, equipment, and quality systems.

Integration of COSDEC with KYCV

The Katsina State Government has merged COSDEC with KYCV to centralise skills training activities.

According to officials, the merger will:

  • Bring all skills training experts together

  • Improve coordination

  • Reduce overlap in responsibilities

  • Strengthen supervision and quality control

The centre now operates structured internal and external quality assurance systems to meet national standards.

Growing Demand for Technical Skills in Nigeria

Across Nigeria, many young people are turning to vocational skills as an alternative to waiting for office jobs.

Skills such as:

  • Computer hardware repairs

  • GSM maintenance

  • Electrical installation

  • Welding and fabrication

continue to provide income opportunities.

With increasing use of smartphones, laptops, and digital devices, trained technicians are needed daily in markets, schools, offices, and homes.

Officials and Stakeholders in Attendance

The launch event was attended by:

  • Hon. Adnan Nahabu, Commissioner for Higher Vocational and Technical Education

  • Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education

  • Members of the IDEAS Project team

  • Development partners

  • Traditional rulers and technical education stakeholders

Their presence reflects cooperation between federal and state institutions in expanding access to technical education.

What Interested Youths Should Do

Young people in Katsina who want to benefit from similar programmes should:

  • Follow updates from KYCV

  • Monitor announcements from the State Ministry of Education

  • Prepare necessary documents early

  • Confirm eligibility requirements before applying

Opportunities under government training schemes are often limited to specific numbers, so early preparation is important.

Conclusion

The IDEAS–TVET programme in Katsina provides structured training, recognised certification, and support toward employment.

With continued funding and proper supervision, programmes like this can help many youths gain steady income and build long-term careers in technical fields.
