The Ebonyi State Government has approved a ₦150,000 Christmas bonus for civil servants across the state, offering additional financial relief ahead of the 2025 festive season. The approval applies to all categories of state civil servants and is expected to be paid before Christmas.
The decision was announced by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru during a church service held at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki over the weekend. The announcement was later confirmed in an official communication issued by the governor’s media office.

According to the statement, Governor Nwifuru informed the congregation that his administration had approved the bonus as part of ongoing efforts to prioritise worker welfare in Ebonyi State. The governor explained that the gesture was aimed at supporting civil servants during the festive period, particularly in light of the current economic realities facing households across the country.
While acknowledging the financial pressures confronting state governments, the governor maintained that workers’ welfare remains a key responsibility of his administration.

According to him, the flyover is designed to ease traffic congestion, modernise the city’s road network, and serve as a long-term investment in urban development. Background: Ebonyi Minimum Wage Adjustment
The Christmas bonus approval comes months after the Ebonyi State Government implemented a ₦20,000 increase in the state minimum wage. In August, Governor Nwifuru approved the adjustment, raising the minimum wage for Ebonyi civil servants to ₦90,000.
The wage increase took immediate effect and was presented by the state government as part of its broader public service reform agenda. The move placed Ebonyi among states that acted early to improve workers’ earnings following national wage discussions.
Connection to National Minimum Wage Review
At the federal level, Nigeria’s minimum wage framework was revised in 2024, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a new minimum wage law following negotiations involving labour unions, employers, and government representatives.
The revised law increased the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, though implementation timelines have varied across states depending on fiscal capacity. Some states are yet to fully adjust their wage structures in line with the new benchmark.
