More than 500 young people from Enugu North Senatorial District and neighboring areas have completed an intensive digital skills programme aimed at preparing them for opportunities in the global digital economy.

The ten day training focused on ethical artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, with participants gaining practical exposure to areas such as AI applications, content development using artificial intelligence tools, robotics, and chatbot creation. The programme was organized by the Igbo Eze South Local Government Area in partnership with the UNESCO Country Office in Abuja and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The training was delivered through the university’s Directorate of International Collaboration and the Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education, combining academic guidance with hands on digital learning.

While declaring the programme concluded, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, described the graduation as a milestone in the state’s effort to reposition young people for a technology driven future.

Professor Onyia said the commitment shown by the participants reflected a growing readiness among Enugu youths to embrace innovation and adapt to global digital trends. He noted that moving away from traditional approaches to learning and work towards digital solutions would improve confidence and open new economic opportunities.

He also commended the leadership of the Chairman of Igbo Eze South Local Government Area, Hon Ferdinand Ukwueze, describing him as a proactive local government leader whose youth focused initiatives align with the broader development vision of the state government.

According to Onyia, the digital competencies acquired during the programme will enable beneficiaries to compete internationally while remaining within Enugu State, contributing to local development without the need for relocation. He added that the current administration has placed strong emphasis on technology driven education and skills as a foundation for sustainable growth.

Speaking on behalf of the Head of Office of the UNESCO Country Office in Abuja, Dr Nneka Okafor said the initiative went beyond basic digital literacy. She explained that the programme focused on sustainable skills that can help young people build careers and solve real world problems using ethical technology practices. She praised the local government leadership for prioritising youth empowerment through relevant and future ready skills.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Simon Otuanya, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Josaphat Onwumere, expressed appreciation for the collaboration. He noted that hosting the programme strengthened the university’s role in promoting innovation, practical learning, and community engagement among young Nigerians.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Igbo Eze South Local Government Area, Hon Ferdinand Ukwueze, said the programme was designed to expose young people to global standards and opportunities within the digital economy. He encouraged the graduates to apply their skills responsibly and represent their communities positively. He also highlighted several developmental projects initiated by his administration within a short period in office.

Additional laptops were also presented to physically challenged participants through the wife of the governor, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, represented by the wife of the council chairman, as part of efforts to promote inclusion.

The programme concluded with the presentation of certificates to all participants and a special recognition award to Hon Ukwueze for his commitment to youth development and investment in digital skills training.
