The Nigerian Forest Guard recruitment is part of a federal security plan aimed at protecting the country’s forest reserves and improving safety in rural areas. The initiative focuses on tackling challenges such as banditry, illegal logging, kidnapping, and other criminal activities linked to ungoverned forest spaces.

The programme operates under the Presidential Forest Guards Initiative, which was formally introduced in May 2025 as part of broader national efforts to strengthen internal security and environmental protection.

Public interest in the recruitment grew sharply after the recent graduation of about 7,000 forest guards who completed an intensive three month training programme. Their graduation and deployment sparked widespread attention, with many Nigerians seeking information on how to apply and whether a recruitment portal is now available. Authorities have also confirmed that the programme is expected to expand to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

How the First 7,000 Forest Guards Were Selected

The initial batch of forest guards was not recruited through a public online application or open national portal. Instead, the process was coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment and selected state governments.

Recruitment focused mainly on seven states identified as frontline areas facing serious security threats linked to forest activities. Candidates were selected through state level structures, community recommendations, and security screening. Those who met the criteria were enrolled for formal training before their graduation and deployment.

This approach explains why many Nigerians were unaware of any application portal during the first phase of the programme.

Is There an Official Recruitment Portal Now

At the time of this update, there is no officially announced national portal for Nigerian Forest Guard recruitment. Despite several online claims and social media posts suggesting that applications are open, the federal government has not released any verified website or application link for a new recruitment phase.

Members of the public are strongly advised to be cautious. Legitimate government recruitment exercises are announced through official channels and do not require payment for forms or processing. Any website or individual requesting money in exchange for recruitment assistance should be treated as fraudulent.

Expected Requirements for Forest Guard Recruitment

Although a detailed nationwide requirement list has not yet been released, available information from the first phase and similar security programmes provides a clear picture of what applicants should expect.

Applicants are expected to be Nigerian citizens within an active working age range, commonly between 18 and 35 years. A minimum educational qualification of SSCE, NECO, or its equivalent is typically required, though higher qualifications may be accepted.

Physical fitness and medical readiness are important due to the demanding nature of forest patrol and security duties. Applicants are also expected to have good character and no criminal record.

Commonly required documents include a valid National Identification Number, educational certificates, birth certificate or age declaration, and recent passport photographs.

How Future Applications Are Likely to Be Handled

At the moment, there is no open nationwide application process. However, based on how the first batch was recruited, future applications are expected to be announced through official federal channels or coordinated at the state level.

State Ministries of Environment, Forestry departments, or designated security coordination offices may play a role in screening and selection once expansion begins. Where an online application is introduced, the government will clearly announce the official portal and provide step by step guidance.

Applicants will not be required to pay at any stage of the process.

What Interested Applicants Should Do Now

Nigerians interested in joining the Forest Guard programme are advised to stay informed through official government announcements and credible news platforms. Preparing necessary documents ahead of time, maintaining physical fitness, and avoiding unverified recruitment links will help applicants stay ready.

Until a formal application process is announced, all genuine updates will come directly from government authorities.
