The Ebonyi State Government has approved a ₦150,000 Christmas bonus for civil servants across the state, offering additional financial relief ahead of the 2025 festive season. The approval applies to all categories of state civil servants and is expected to be paid before Christmas.
The decision was announced by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru during a church service held at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki over the weekend. The announcement was later confirmed in an official communication issued by the governor’s media office.
Announcement Made During Government House Chapel Service
According to the statement, Governor Nwifuru informed the congregation that his administration had approved the bonus as part of ongoing efforts to prioritise worker welfare in Ebonyi State. The governor explained that the gesture was aimed at supporting civil servants during the festive period, particularly in light of the current economic realities facing households across the country.
While acknowledging the financial pressures confronting state governments, the governor maintained that workers’ welfare remains a key responsibility of his administration.
Relief for Workers Amid Rising Living Costs
The ₦150,000 Christmas bonus is expected to provide temporary relief for Ebonyi civil servants at a time when food prices, transportation costs, and household expenses have continued to rise nationwide. For many workers, the festive period often comes with increased financial demands, including travel, family obligations, and social commitments.
Labour analysts note that end-of-year bonuses, though not statutory, have become an important morale booster for public servants, especially in states where salaries are paid regularly and welfare commitments are sustained.
Governor Reaffirms Commitment Despite Revenue Challenges
During his address, Governor Nwifuru acknowledged that Ebonyi State, like many others, has faced revenue constraints over the past year. However, he stressed that these challenges would not deter his administration from making decisions that positively impact workers and residents.
He reiterated that governance requires balancing limited resources with pressing social responsibilities, adding that his government remains focused on maintaining stability in the civil service and delivering visible results.
Clarification on Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Flyover Project
The governor also used the occasion to address public discussions surrounding the Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Flyover, a major infrastructure project currently under construction in the state capital.
Responding to concerns and speculation about the pace of work on the project, Governor Nwifuru stated that the flyover remains on course. He explained that the scale and technical demands of the project require careful execution, which may not always be immediately visible to the public.
According to him, the flyover is designed to ease traffic congestion, modernise the city’s road network, and serve as a long-term investment in urban development. He urged residents to rely on verified information rather than social media commentary, assuring them that the project would be completed to standard.
Background: Ebonyi Minimum Wage Adjustment
The Christmas bonus approval comes months after the Ebonyi State Government implemented a ₦20,000 increase in the state minimum wage. In August, Governor Nwifuru approved the adjustment, raising the minimum wage for Ebonyi civil servants to ₦90,000.
The wage increase took immediate effect and was presented by the state government as part of its broader public service reform agenda. The move placed Ebonyi among states that acted early to improve workers’ earnings following national wage discussions.
Connection to National Minimum Wage Review
At the federal level, Nigeria’s minimum wage framework was revised in 2024, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a new minimum wage law following negotiations involving labour unions, employers, and government representatives.
The revised law increased the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, though implementation timelines have varied across states depending on fiscal capacity. Some states are yet to fully adjust their wage structures in line with the new benchmark.
Ebonyi State’s earlier wage adjustment and the newly approved Christmas bonus place the state among those making visible efforts to cushion the effects of economic pressures on public servants.
Focus on Worker Welfare and Governance
With the approval of the ₦150,000 Christmas bonus, the Ebonyi State Government has reinforced its position on prioritising civil servants’ welfare alongside infrastructure development. Observers note that such measures often help maintain industrial harmony and strengthen trust between government and the workforce.
As the festive season approaches, civil servants across the state are expected to receive official payment details through established payroll channels.
The state government has not announced any additional conditions attached to the bonus, and no timeline beyond the Christmas period has been indicated.
