The Edo State Government has started a digital skills training programme for youths as part of efforts to prepare young people for technology-based jobs.
The programme was flagged off in Benin City on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu. It is a six-month advanced job-ready tech skills training organised by the Edo State Government in collaboration with Google and DeepTech Ready.
Dr Iyamu said the state government is committed to equipping youths with practical digital skills that will help them compete for opportunities within and outside Nigeria.
He said the government is also ready to support students who show commitment and innovation during the programme.

At the event, a 400-level Mechatronics Engineering student of the University of Benin, Miss Elizabeth Chioma Chiketarauba, displayed a solar-powered tricycle she designed.
Chiketarauba said she was inspired to build the tricycle after experiencing a seizure while trying to board a commercial bus due to smoke from vehicle exhaust.
She explained that the tricycle runs on solar energy and can be used for transportation. She added that it can charge mobile phones, supply electricity to a home, and support small businesses such as barbing salons.
Reacting to the invention, Dr Iyamu announced a one million naira support for the student on behalf of the Edo State Government. He urged students to focus on innovation and practical solutions to everyday problems.
The commissioner said Governor Godwin Obaseki has approved the upgrade of the state’s technology hub to support the digital skills programme.
He disclosed that at least 25 computer-based test centres will be created across the state to support training and examinations.
According to him, about 800 youths, mostly students, will be trained and certified in digital skills under the programme.
He encouraged students in Edo State to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that digital skills remain important for employment and career growth.
The programme is part of the state government’s efforts to reduce youth unemployment and promote technology-driven development.
