The Federal Government has called on qualified Nigerian health professionals to volunteer for the 2026 Hajj National Medical Team, a specialised medical corps coordinated by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The call, issued through The Presidency, invites doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other eligible health workers to apply to provide medical services to Nigerian pilgrims during the 2026 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia. Participation is strictly on a volunteer basis, in line with international standards governing Hajj medical operations.

According to the official notice, the National Medical Team will be responsible for delivering essential healthcare services to Nigerian pilgrims throughout the pilgrimage period, which involves large crowds, intense physical exertion, and extreme climatic conditions.

Applications are to be submitted online through NAHCON’s official portal, and only candidates who meet the required professional and ethical standards will be considered.

What Is NAHCON and What Does It Do?

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is a federal government agency established to regulate and coordinate all Hajj and Umrah activities for Nigerian pilgrims.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Registration and supervision of pilgrims

  • Coordination with Saudi authorities

  • Welfare, logistics, and accommodation arrangements

  • Provision of medical services during Hajj

As part of its mandate, NAHCON sets up the National Medical Team every Hajj season to provide healthcare services to Nigerian pilgrims in the Holy Land.

Role of the National Medical Team During Hajj

Hajj is one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world, involving intense physical activities, large crowds, and extreme weather conditions. Nigerian pilgrims, many of whom are elderly or living with underlying medical conditions, require structured medical support throughout the pilgrimage.

The Hajj National Medical Team is responsible for:

  • Providing emergency and routine medical care

  • Managing chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes

  • Handling heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and exhaustion

  • Supporting disease surveillance and infection control

  • Ensuring compliance with Saudi health regulations

Medical personnel serve at Nigerian clinics and designated facilities during the Hajj period.

Why the Programme Is Strictly Voluntary

The Presidency emphasized that participation is “strictly on a volunteer basis in line with international standards.”

In practical terms, this means:

  • Medical professionals are not recruited as paid staff

  • Participation is based on professional service and humanitarian commitment

  • Selection follows global Hajj medical practices adopted by many countries

  • Volunteers are expected to maintain professional ethics and discipline

While welfare arrangements and operational support may be provided, the programme is not a conventional employment opportunity.

Who Can Apply for the NAHCON 2026 Hajj Medical Team?

NAHCON has not restricted the application to a single medical cadre. Based on past Hajj medical team compositions and standard practice, applications are typically open to qualified Nigerian health professionals, including:

  • Medical doctors

  • Nurses and midwives

  • Pharmacists

  • Medical laboratory scientists

  • Environmental health officers

  • Public health professionals

Applicants must be properly licensed by their relevant professional councils and be in active service.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Be medically fit for the Hajj environment

  • Have no disciplinary record with their professional body

  • Be available for the full Hajj operation period

  • Be willing to serve on a volunteer basis

Applicants should ensure all information provided is accurate and verifiable.

Purpose of the Guarantors’ Form and Applicant Declaration

As part of the application process, candidates are required to complete:

1. Guarantors’ Form

This form is used to:

  • Confirm the applicant’s professional conduct and character

  • Provide institutional or senior professional backing

  • Ensure accountability during the Hajj operation

Guarantors are usually senior officers, heads of institutions, or respected professionals who can vouch for the applicant.

2. Applicant Declaration

The declaration confirms that the applicant:

  • Accepts NAHCON’s rules and code of conduct

  • Agrees to comply with Saudi and Nigerian regulations

Submission of false information may lead to disqualification
