NCDMB Launches Nationwide Training to Prepare 10,000 Nigerians for Oil and Gas Jobs

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board has introduced the Oil and Gas Field Readiness Training Programme, a nationwide capacity building initiative aimed at equipping Nigerians with practical skills required in the oil and gas sector. The programme is designed to train more than 10,000 Nigerians and prepare them for employment opportunities arising from ongoing and upcoming energy projects across the country.

This training is fully funded and focuses on real industry needs, ensuring participants gain hands on experience and recognised certifications that improve employability within Nigeria’s energy value chain.

Why the NCDMB Field Readiness Programme Is Important

Nigeria’s oil and gas industry continues to attract fresh investments, with several projects in exploration, production, and infrastructure development currently underway. These investments create demand for skilled local manpower.

To ensure Nigerians are well positioned to benefit from these opportunities, the NCDMB developed this training programme to close existing skills gaps. The initiative is anchored on the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, which places priority on developing local capacity and promoting Nigerian participation in the sector.

By focusing on practical and industry relevant skills, the programme supports long term workforce development rather than short term training.

Skills Areas Covered Under the Programme

Applicants are allowed to select up to three skill areas based on their qualifications and career interests. The training areas reflect current and future needs within the oil and gas industry.

Available skill tracks include subsea engineering covering wellheads, flowlines, and umbilicals, underwater welding, control and automation engineering for rig and well operations, helicopter piloting, and marine operations such as vessel maintenance and marine electrical work.

Other areas include production and maintenance engineering, quality assurance and quality control with non destructive testing certification, geoscience disciplines such as seismic interpretation and wellsite geology, as well as digital and data driven technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, drones, and industrial data systems.

Who Is Eligible to Apply

The Field Readiness Training Programme is open to young Nigerians who meet specific academic and age requirements.

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens and below the age of 35 at the time of application. They are expected to hold at least an OND, HND, or university degree in relevant disciplines. These include petroleum engineering, mechanical, electrical or civil engineering, geology, geophysics, welding, metallurgy, gas related fields, computer science, computer engineering, or other closely related science and technical courses.

Selection is based on qualifications, data submitted on the portal, and alignment with the chosen skill areas.

Training Structure and Participant Support

The programme runs for a period of two to three years, depending on the selected skill path. Training is delivered through a blend of classroom learning, laboratory sessions, and workshop based practicals to ensure participants develop both theoretical knowledge and hands on competence.

Participants also undergo industry recognised certification processes and complete a minimum of six months on the job training with approved oil and gas service companies.

In addition to training, participants receive structured support, including monthly stipends, medical examinations before mobilisation, insurance coverage, and personal protective equipment. Graduates are also captured in the NCDMB national skills database, which improves visibility for potential employment opportunities within the industry.
